The 3 powerful steps to develop your daily routine
The 3 powerful steps to develop yur daily routineThe 3 powerful steps to develop your daily routineYou need to learn how to select your thoughts just the same way you select your clothes every day. This is a power you can cultivate. If you want to control things in your life so bad, work on the mind. Thats the only thing you should be trying to control. - Elizabeth GilbertThe winter solstice recently passed and now, we find ourselves deep in the peak of shortened days, cold weather and lots of time inside with family and relatives. The lack of sun can really damper our moods and take away some of our energy. If we let it. Winter can make it challenging to find inspiration at times. But the days of less sunlight can also lead to great opportunities for solitude, reflection and contemplation. While it may be tough to feel as inspired, I find that wintertime often is great for planning and refocusing our priorities. Some of my best ideas, as well as my most productive planning and actio ns have taken place at this time of the year. In fact, the majority of the writing that I did formy first book, The Value of You, occurred during the wintertime last year. It was a special time Ill never forget.Following the holidays, there are less distractions. And as a result, there are more reasons to find things that inspire andlight the fire insideof our hearts. In this vein, I urge you to develop an inspirational routine each morning. It may come through the power of meditation, prayer, genuine heartfelt interaction with those that you love or from your favorite song. It could be a video that plays back the piano recital you played to perfection that brought the house down.It may be the words of this article or a book you find so profound and hold in such high esteem, you get the chills before opening the pages.Develop your routine. Ill show you what works for me and how you can integrate this into your life.Heres How to Develop YourRoutineGreat are they who see that spiritual is stronger than any material force?- ?that thoughts rule the world.?- ?Ralph WaldoEmersonMake your routine an every day thing. As Ive climbed the mountain of productivity this year, I realize that I never want to come down. The ascension - the journey - has been a magical ride and it reassures me that all of my progression toward self-actualization, as well as greater harmony and rhythm in living the life of my destiny has been worth the pain and occasional doubts.Dedicate 10 minutes of contemplation time, ideally, at the beginning of each day. This sets the tone for your day and gets you feeling inspired. All you need are 10 minutes of deep, powerful thinking without distraction and with a beginners mind.Use this time alone in solitude, in a quiet place. Focus your thoughts on positive, stimulative thoughts such as romantic love, sexual love for a partner, girlfriend/boyfriend, wife or husband. Also, music, friendship and envisioning yourself attaining success or fame. Theres t remendous power that comes through dreaming and seeing yourself standing in the winners circle.Get these positive thoughts going and keep them going. Write down these thoughts that come to mind. Keep referring back to them throughout your work day or school day. Think of them when youre out in the social world, during moments of difficulty or times of joy. Look at them again before you go to bed at night and reset your mind. Then rest and get read for the new day with excitement, anticipation and a clear mind for fresh, new thoughts. What has become truer for me by the day is the concept that we control our own destiny through the power of our thoughts. We emotionalize our ideas with the power of love, faith and hope. We take these thoughts and envision ourselves doing what we desire. And we put it into plan and take the action that weve dreamed of. It really is that simple. Do this and you will never be denied. There is no shame in any idea, as long as you believe in it and feel it w ill add value to your life and the lives of others. Dont concern yourself with the ingenuity of your idea. Your race, your cause is the one that speaks to the desires and dreams of your heart. Thats what makes you unique and special.Ive got a long way to go. Chances are, so do you. The way to cultivate and build momentum - which you can then transform into empowered thought and constructive action is through inspiration - the power of fire that lifts your spirit and brings you unbridled enthusiasm. Be inspired everyday.A Story ToTellAny idea, plan, or purpose may be placed in the mind through repetition of thought.?- ?NapoleonHillThis is a story I know well. Its the story of my best friend, my brother, Kevin. These days my brother is seen on national television five nights each week on ESPN. Hes a broadcast journalist and celebrity in his own right. Everything he has can be attributed to his natural talents, perseverance, desire and faith in himself.Kevin worked hard until he reac hed the pinnacle of his profession. He reached the top because he envisioned himself reaching the top. He dreamed big and thought prodigious, stimulative thoughts. He had the mindset of a winner. But keep in mind, Kevins success did notlage come overnight.Kevin knew when he was in 8th grade what he wanted to do with his life. He started announcing sports scores over the intercom at our middle school. He did the same thing while in high school. Kevin used his basketball-playing ability to earn an athletic scholarship at the college level, where he attended a school with one of the top Radio TV programs in the United States. After graduation, he embarked on what is now over a 20-year career in sports broadcasting. He busted his tail for nine long years at a regional television station making meager money. There were moments of doubt, frustration and at times, loneliness. Kevin dreamed of being on national television or working in a big market. But it seemed so far away.He concentrated on getting better each day. He surrounded himself with inspiring thoughts, stories and images of fellow broadcasters who made the big time, as well powerful stories of athletes. He kept going. Kept believing. Finally, his big break came in 2006 when he accepted a job with WCBS radio in New York. Less than one year later, he was working on television for WCBS-TV. And in 2008, he reached the big time he was hired by ESPN. 11 years after graduatingfrom college, with a few lean years in between where he thought about quitting or changing professions, Kevin received an offer to work at the worldwide leader of sports.Your JourneyChances are, you will not find success orpersonal fulfillment in your first job. Few people are blessed with both the talent and foresight toknow precisely what they want to do with their livesright after college. Even less people know and possess this ability at a young age. My brother, Kevin, is one of those precious few lads who did know.We all have unique stor ies to share with the world. Where are you on your journey? Are you going through thedoldrums of doubt and fear? Do you see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel - the end-vision of your goal? And if you do, are you running into road blocks of creativity? What are your mental challenges? What are your emotional battles?Perhaps your path is as open as the Pacific Coast Highway at sunset in Laguna Beach. Maybe its a Midtown Manhattan traffic jam. Its all a state of mind. We need inspiration to help us create the beautiful landscapes of limitless possibility in our mind that serve as the foundation for our magical journeys. You are the creator of your world. When you are safe in the knowledge that you control your worldly destiny, nothing will ever stop you. Those with a winning mindset are never denied. They inspire themselves to achieve great things.Be inspired. Enjoy this winter season and take some time for yourself to develop a routine that positions you for fulfillment an d productivity. As St.Francis of Asisi once wrote,Start by doing whats necessary then do whats possible and suddenly you are doing the impossible. This article originally appeared on Medium.

Onboarding a Successful Placement for your Staffing Clients
Onboarding a Successful Placement for your Staffing ClientsOnboarding a Successful Placement for your Staffing ClientsOnboarding a Successful Placement for your Staffing Clients RossheimOnboarding should be much more than just completing forms and telling the worker how to sign in at the front desk. Thats especially true if youre looking to create a successful placement for your staffing clients. In fact, contingent workers need a similar approach as new employee orientation, including Training on the often idiosyncratic systems of client companiesFamiliarity with all resources required to do the jobOrientation about the companys cultureWe spoke with staffing firm executives to learn how they and their clients work to ensure 360-degree preparedness for temporary associates.Everyone wants to see temporary workers get productive ASAP. Its critical for the staffing agency to get client buy-in on effective onboarding. Its in our mutual best interest that candidates become productive mor e quickly, says Sandy Mazur, a division president at staffing firm Spherion.Delve into the clients orientation process. Client companies have widely varying ideas about what constitutes an effective employee orientation its the staffing agencys job to establish the minimum requirements. We look at what the client would typically provide for orientation, then maybe make recommendations, says Cassie Viau, absatzwirtschaft manager at staffing firm CoreMedical Group.A couple of ideas for an effective orientation We sometimes give candidates site tours and both oral and written guidelines on what it takes to be successful, says Mazur.Put the temps role in context for the clients full-time staff. Its important that the client communicates to its internal team why contingent workers are being brought in and exactly what roles they will play. If this doesnt happen, full-time staff may feel confused or even threatened. Were there to be the middleman, says Corey Pinkham, Northeast regionrecruit ing director for Randstad Technologies.Invest resources into the temps critical first day on the job. An agency may need to go the extra mile at the start of an assignment. In some cases, one of Randstads staffing professionals will accompany the IT consultant to the client site for day one on the job, which takes the edge off those first meetings, Pinkham says. Then we check in periodically.Temps need as much training as FTEs do. Some clients may naively believe that temps need less preparation for the job than full-time employees do. Agencies need to persuade their clients otherwise.Every job in every company needs some degree of training, says Mazur, and its the agencys job to assess whether that training is being delivered. If software is required for the job, for example, Spherion makes sure theres documented proof that the worker received training, Mazur says.Ensure that the temp has access to all useful client resources. Temp workers cant utilize tools that no one has told th em about and yet this is a common shortcoming in onboarding. Staffing firms should work to ensure that their associates are granted access to all client resources that are required to get the job done.We also encourage clients to train contractors as they would full-time employees, says Pinkham.Keep communication lines open. It should go without saying but in the real world, it often doesnt that staffing firms serve no ones interest by leaving newly assigned associates to their own devices.Communication is about making sure the consultant understands the clients true expectations, and thats ultimately up to the client, says Pinkham.Dont forget the little stuff. Temporary workers naturally will have a lot on their minds when they head to a new assignment the agency and client company should do all it can to reduce distractions to the work at hand.Thisis essentialtemp management.Where do you park? Is it OK to bring in a bag lunch? These are the things that the client can quickly tak e off the candidates mind, says Mazur.Keep the conversation going. When can a staffing firm safely stopping asking associates how theyre doing? Never. Even when the temporary associate appears to be settled in an assignment, Spherion keeps asking how its going with questions like Are you doing what you thought you would do? Are there any challenges?Sell clients on the value that only they can add. Many of these practices require client companies to devote resources to each incoming temp. Clients need to be sold on their contributions to the onboarding.Clients are willing to invest the effort once they see they get an ROI for it, says Mazur.

The Importance of Interpersonal Skills in Business
The Importance of Interpersonal Skills in BusinessThe Importance of Interpersonal Skills in BusinessThe meaning of the phrase interpersonal skills are the skills we use to interact with others properly. In business, this phrase is generally used when seeking an employee with a strong ability to get along with others to complete a job. In recent years, the importance of interpersonal skills has grown in a persons career. In an age of data and technology, when most are connected globally to friends or tribes via cell phones and social media, the importance of interpersonal skills has been given new life. The growing demand for workplace etiquetteOur interpersonal skills (aka. people skills) speak volumes about who we are as people. People, in general, will fasson an impression of you based on your ability to communicate. If you are viewed as someone who cannot communicate, you will be viewed as incapable of learning workplace etiquette. Ignoring the importance of interpersonal skills can lead to a shorter lifespan in a job or not getting hired at all.Everything you do tells a story about youEven the most open-minded, open-hearted individual cannot escape human nature. The way we stand and make eye contact tells others how to evaluate your professionalism. You may be the smartest person in the room, but if you present yourself to your co-workers, boss, or hiring manager in a way that says, Leave me alone, they will give you what you appear to be asking for.More so, how you dress may be accepted by others. But if you appear to be ignoring how your outfit makes others feel, they very well could start to think you do not care about the way they feel. You may be accepted for being different, but if you are ignoring others feelings, they will believe you do not understand the importance of interpersonal skills. You are alienating yourself from the companys culture. The importance of interpersonal skills for interviewsThose with general people skills never have to worry abou t the knowing the followingWhen to talkWhen to stop talkingWhen a job interview or meeting went well or badlyWhen it is time to change the way one is communicatingHow they are making others feel while they speakPeoples boundariesUsing an exampleA guy walks into an interview at a tech company dressed in a suit. He gets some looks from others and he knows the looks are not positive. The company is one of the largest in the world and he wants to impress. As he looks around the geschftszimmer, he notices everyone is dressed in t-shirts, jeans, and sneakers. He also notices some of the workers appear uncomfortable by his well-dressed presence. Now, this guy understands the importance of interpersonal skills. Before he is greeted by a receptionist, he quickly leaves the office and heads to the bathroom. Luckily he has been through this before. He wants the job but knows he misjudged the companys culture. So, he takes off his suit jacket and tie. He stuffs it in his bag and changes into a ni ce pair of jeans. He decides it would be best to do this interview dressedbusiness casual.Luckily, he was prepared. There are so many types of business cultures these days and he grew up in a time where everyone wore suits to work. Times have changed and he wanted to be prepared for anything. The interview went well and led to a 2nd round interview.Top 10 Most Important People SkillsThose who have a grasp of the importance of interpersonal skills possess the following skillsRelationship managing (aka. the difference between friends, being friendly, and courtesy)Self-confidenceStrong work ethicListeningCollaborativeAppreciativePositiveHumbleIntegrityPerceptive (almost empathic)Above all, they know the importance of when to apply each one.The secrets to learning general people skillsOne must talk with people in front of them. And it also helps to travel. There are some who believe disconnecting from technology is a good way to learn the importance of interpersonal skills. But the real ity is technology is used as a form of communication. All new technology demands a new way of communicating and it has been this way since the invention of the telephone in the 1800s.Therefore, one must learn to communicate with people, face to face, and through screens. Simply being good at only one style of communication sets limits on the number of interpersonal skills you can learn. If you would like to read more on ways to communicate either in person or on LinkedIn, be sure to check out the Find My Profession blog.

Study Meetings with agendas are less wanted, but they work
Study Meetings with agendas are less wanted, but they workStudy Meetings with agendas are less wanted, but they workMeetings can be time-sucking vortexes that steal our attention and energy. The formality of forced participation and setting an agenda can seem like a needless hassle when you can just communicate what you want over a quick email. But heres some bad news for those of us who hate meetings - they actually work.In a study that compared the formal communication of meetings with the informal communication of emails and phone calls in industrial companies, formal communication came out on top. Across 73 manufacturing plants in 18 countries, meetings, with their standard protocols of timing and set participation, were better at preventing operational glitches that held up supply chains and delayed deliveries than informal emails and phone calls. The relatively inexpensive formal system of periodic cross-functional meetings turned out to be the only effective channel to communi cate and mitigate the impact of internal and customer glitches, business professors Antti Tenhil and Fabrizio Salvador wrote in their paper for Decision Sciences.Meetings remove questions about whose job it is to do whatIf you prefer emails and calls over meetings, you are not alone. Humans naturally prefer the spontaneity of a phone call and email over the coercive, artificial organization-specific protocols of meetings, researchers found, citing previous research. But this preference of communication did not translate to effectiveness. Overall, the researchers found that the formal process of a meeting welches more effective at removing the ambiguity of who was going to address a glitch and how it was going to be resolved.According to our interviewees, formal interpersonal channels are particularly apt at enabling such interactive cross-functional communications, the researchers wrote. They ensure reciprocity while simultaneously enforcing formal protocols, guaranteeing that the r elevant parties receive, understand, and act upon the exception messages.Good meetings with agendas and the right participants hold us accountable to what we say we are going to do. Thats not to say that getting on the phone and calling someone is useless in a company. The researchers suggested that when unexpected events happen, informal communication is useful, but less useful when it comes to day-to-day operations.Emails turned out to be the most popular channel in this study yet they only had a complementary role in the mitigation of glitches, the researchers concluded. All this suggests that the formal communication channels may have a worse reputation than they deserve.
